A Tucson woman and a Concord, California man were sentenced to 4 years in federal prison for trying to smuggle 2,000 rounds of rifle ammunition into Mexico.
Ana Guadalupe Carillo Villa, 23, and Miguel Ochoa Ruiz, 39, were found guilty of smuggling goods from the United States and conspiracy, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Ochoa Ruiz bought 2,000 rounds of rifle ammunition and 248 high-capacity rifle magazines in Phoenix on July 7, 2016. The pair drove the items to Nogales, where Carrillo Villa tried to smuggle them across the border. Customs officers stopped her at the port of entry with the ammunition and magazines.
Ochoa Ruiz returned to Phoenix the next day and bough 11,000 rounds of ammunition and drove them to Nogales. Law enforcement officers stopped him before he could try to enter Mexico, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Evidence showed Ocho Ruiz and Carrilo Villa had conspired to smuggle ammunition at least four other times.
