A man and his 80-pound English bulldog were rescued from Madera Canyon Tuesday afternoon, after the dog became exhausted while hiking, officials said.

While hiking with a group of friends, a man and his dog, Delilah, fell behind and became separated from the group. Shortly after, Delilah started to show signs of heat exhaustion, according to a post on Green Valley Fire District's Facebook page.

The man, 18, made the decision to leave his dog on the trail as he called 911 and ran down the trail to seek help, the post said.

According to fire officials, an 80-pound English bulldog showed signs of heat exhaustion during a hike with her owner on Tuesday, June 26.

Firefighters met him at the bottom of Madera Canyon. After the man was rehydrated, he led firefighters back through the trail to find Delilah. When Delilah wasn't immediately found, firefighters sent the man back down the trail for his own safety, the post said.

After hours of searching, firefighters were able to locate Delilah further up the hiking trail. According to fire officials, Delilah was "loaded up in a stokes basket" and carried down Madera Canyon, according to the post.

Tuesday's high temperature was 105 degrees.
