A deputy answering a burglary call Friday morning at a group home in Catalina shot and killed a man who was armed with a knife and fighting with another person, authorities say.

The incident started just after 9 a.m. when the deputy answered a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at the group home in the community north of Tucson, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said Friday in a news release.

The caller said the person breaking into the group home had a knife and was holding a hostage, the release said.

The unidentified deputy arrived to find a man with a knife in a fight with another person.

The man was shot after ignoring commands to drop the knife, the release said.

He was declared dead at the scene.

The person being attacked was taken to a hospital with with non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

No one else was injured.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team, the multi-agency unit tasked with investigating local officer-involved shootings, has been activated. The Tucson Police Department has been assigned to lead the investigation along with the Marana Police Department as the secondary agency.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a separate review of department policies.

Findings from the criminal investigation will be sent to the Pima County Attorney’s Office, which is standard procedure.
