Star columnist Tim Steller and photographer Mike Christy traveled to the Barry Goldwater Range in southwestern Arizona this week to look at the border fence.

It turns out, certain stretches of fence make no sense — they're built to keep out vehicles in terrain where no vehicles can cross anyway. And pedestrians can simply walk around them.

With the administration floating proposals for expensive new border barriers, we are at risk of wasting much more money on senseless fences.
