Well, I’m hoping you all survived the holidays, got all those decorations put away for another year (you DID scrutinize them I hope), and are ready to begin a new project.

For me, that will be hitting the pantry, fridge and freezer. It’s amazing how much bottled, boxed and canned food we amass over time and never think to check out the expiration dates.

I admit, I’m as guilty as the next one, so, this year I am stripping the pantry and checking those dates to ensure they are all within eatable range. It’s the extra sale items we tend to take advantage of tuck into the back of the cabinet and then never use that drive me crazy. I also plan on reaching deep into the back and bottom of the freezer to make sure those frozen veggies and meats are usable. Of course, those relishes, mustards, yogurts and whatever in the fridge will not go unnoticed either.

If you don’t plan on using some of those boxed or canned goods in the near future and they still have a valid shelf life, you can donate them to the local food bank as I often do this time of year.

It gives me a good feeling; makes room for items I do use on a regular basis and allows me to purge, clean and rearrange everything in a neat and orderly manner. You all know by now how much I love rearranging… just ask Jimmy!!

Of course, this spurt of energy shouldn’t just take care of the pantry, fridge and freezer. Why stop there? Get into your vanity cabinets and drawers, linen closets, etc. and repeat… Got towels and sheets that are never, ever used? SaddleBrooke Pet Rescue Network has a drop off the first Friday of each month and those towels are always welcome. Other organizations such as the Golden Goose, Vets, Goodwill, etc. will happily take sheets and blankets. Also, check your make-up, creams, etc. Did you know facial products have an expiration date? Neither did I! Make sure you check antibiotic creams and gels as well…

I know it sounds like all I do is clean, purge and rearrange with my time, but really… this is not an all-day chore. I am an early bird energizer so I like to tackle these chores first thing in the morning, usually on one of Jimmy’s golf days when he is out of the house, and I can put everything on the counters for sorting.

If you are lucky enough to have a partner that doesn’t let the mess interfere with their space, then I say set aside a time that works for you. This isn’t a race, it doesn’t have to be done yesterday, and who cares if your kitchen looks like a warehouse for a few hours. When everything is sorted, boxed, or returned to the pantry, fridge or freezer, you can sit back, relax, and know that your house is up to date and you can spend the rest of 2024 planning fun trips, vacations, dance or exercise classes, whatever your heart desires.

And if you donate items to a charitable organization, it not only gives you a feeling of warmth, but it is also a good way to get a tax write off…
