Say goodbye to builder plate glass mirrors and Hollywood lights! A low-cost primary bathroom refresh by Jo Parsons.

Is your bathroom still looking like a standard developer style? Full length mirror, Hollywood lights, cultured marble counter with sink? Do you know how much an updated bathroom increases the value of your home?

Doing a bathroom makeover does not have to break the bank nor force you to move out so renovations can be done.

That plate glass mirror can be easily removed with the help of a couple of strong men. You see, once the clips at the top of the mirror and removed, the actual mirror can be lifted out of the bottom track and bam! You are on your way to a whole new look.

The Hollywood lights can be easily swapped out by a licensed electrician or a qualified handyman with little repair work needed depending on the new style you choose.

That worn cultured marble countertop will need to be removed and replaced by a qualified contractor or handyman. I know, but it will be worth it in the end. If your current countertop is on the low side, the contractor should be able to raise it prior to installing new sinks (undermounts are best) and the countertop. There are many beautiful products out there to choose from. I extended the same Cambria kitchen counters into my bathrooms to give our villa a cohesive look, which I prefer.

New faucets are relatively inexpensive and totally change the look too!

Once you have chosen your new countertops, sinks, lighting and faucets, you can decide if you want to keep the existing finish on your cabinets or update them with paint. It’s a pretty easy makeover but it makes a big difference.

Shower doors looking grungy and dated? Talk to a good plumber or glass company about replacing those as well.

Of course, while you have committed to updating the vanity and shower enclosure, you should also update the walls with a fresh coat of paint that will complement and enhance the new look.

Finally, decide on new mirrors to center over your sinks. There are some wonderful choices out there so be creative and splurge.

Leaving the medicine cabinets is a personal choice. I removed ours and had niches with double shelves installed in their place. It gives the space a modern, updated look and I don’t miss the cabinets at all.

This is a project that can be done on a reasonable budget, but it will totally transform your master bath into a luxury room—and aren’t you worth it?
