The MountainView/Preserve Women’s Golf Association started off spring with a sprint and a Member/Guest event on Tuesday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 12. Donna Watson and Tina Donovan co-chaired this year’s Derby in the Desert’. Entry Tickets included golf and lunches, and a fun, afternoon Horse Race at MountainView (the pictures say it all!).

The ‘Derby’ golf event was two days (Preserve and MountainView), two person teams with a max stroke differential of 10 strokes between partners (play from the same tees), with prizes for KPs (Closet to Pin). Final Payouts were flighted, and included Secretariat ‘73 (1st Janey Clausen/Jean Cheszek), Seattle Slew ‘77 (1st Cathy Quesnell & Leann Biesterfelt), Seattle Slew ‘79 (1st Debbie McMullin & Jennie Renschler), Sunday Silence ‘89 (1st Jacque Twitty & Jeanne Jensen), Silver Charm ‘97 (1st Susan Dell & Sally Drennen), and Street Sense ‘07 (Debbie Mielke & Vera Robl).

Then, on Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2, the ladies sprang into action for the Club Championship, sponsored by Sonora Investment Management. Golfers competed in a two-day, overall low gross score tournament to claim the Club Championship and grand prize. There were also flighted prizes for low gross and net, and for KPs on all Par 3s. The event, dubbed by some as the ‘Windy Classic’, started with a blustery 7:30 a.m. Shotgun at The Preserve. Day two was held at The Mountainview Golf Club.

Janey Clausen, who won the event with a low gross of 171, said of the weather, it was “very windy both days, but fun nonetheless. I think (especially the first day) conditions were a challenge for all of us. The scores weren’t very low.” This was Clausen’s fourth time as Club Champion. An awards luncheon was held at the MountainView Ballroom.

Congratulations to Club Champion Clausen, and all of the Flight Prize Winners (An * denotes a tie broken according to USGA rules).

  • Flight 1– First place — Lori Stegnick-2024 Champion (175), second place — Cathy Quesnell (176), third place — Denny Dalton (178) and fourth place — Karen Wilson (186).
  • Flight 2– First place — Donna Watson (174), second place — Melanie Bassham (179), third place — Jane Megrdle and fourth place — Linda Schauer.
  • Flight 3– First place — Suzan Carter (*185), second place — Judy Grow (*185), third place — Debbie Mielke (190) and fourth place — Tina Donovan (191).
  • Flight 4– First place — Marianne Wicks (198), second place — Connie Simonds (216), third place — Connie Maslowski (220) and fourth place — Donna Yon (229).
  • Flight 5– First place — Marilyn Brewer (151), second place — Donna Roth Hills (*153), third place — Susan Dell (*153) and fourth place — Jenni Farquhar (160).
