According to Dr. Maria De Leon, a Neurologist and a person with a Parkinson’s diagnosis, fatigue is experienced by approximately 50 percent and is different than tiredness and does not get relieved by sleep or rest.

Sleep disturbance like REM behavior, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and insomnia all take away the rest and recovery from a night of sleep. Active dreaming can be draining also. Medication can help.

Vitamin Deficiencies: B12 and Vitamin D are common in chronic illness like Parkinson’s affecting red blood cell formation while Vitamin D helps protect cells from inflammation and helps mitochondria (the energy generating part of the cells) improve and increase oxygen absorption.

Uncontrolled Blood Sugar: Dopamine affects the body’s glucose level including drastic and sudden changes in blood sugar levels that can cause symptoms of listlessness.

High or Low Blood Pressure: Fluctuations in blood pressure can be very sudden and persistent, the medication can make you feel lethargic. Monitor your blood pressure and be sure to follow prescription guidelines.

Gut Microbiome: Dr. De Leone states that some researchers believe fatigue can be caused by lack of full nutrient absorption from the gut. Constipation can interfere with full gut function and may contribute to sepsis.

Discussing these symptoms with your practitioners is a step toward a solution.

Our classes serve two purposes, to build muscle mass to recover lost strength and functions, and to counteract the neurologic deficits that occur and to prevent the progression of the disease symptoms. We do this with weighted movements, education at every session, and sharing experience, strength and support for one another.

We are listed in HOA-1 under exercise and support. Classes begin on Mondays at 12 p.m. in the Fitness Center and on Tuesday and Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the HOA-1 Art and Craft Center, room 3. We are located next to the SaddleBrooke Gift Shop. All are welcome! We have quarterly support and educational meetings on the third Thursday in 2025, January, on 16, April 17, July 17 and November 13.
