Resurrection Lutheran Men’s Breakfast featured Paul Belanger, Sergeant Major, Army Veteran on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Jim Seppala opened the breakfast meeting. Ken Shepard blessed the food with an opening prayer, and the attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Program chairman for the meeting, Ron Mc Nutt introduced Paul Belanger who spoke to us about the life and career of American General Douglas MacArthur.

Military AchievementsHe helped organize and lead the 42nd Division in France during World War I.

He rose to command the Southwest Pacific Theatre during World War II and is best remembered for his “I shall return” quote.

He oversaw the successful Allied occupation of postwar Japan.

Led United Nations forces in the Korean War.

Five star General and Field Marshall of the Philippine Army

He was a warrior, and later clashed with President Harry Truman over war policy and was removed from command. Some scholars tend to minimize MacArthur’s long catalogue of bad decisions, elevating him to “American Caesar”. Nevertheless, historians find him fascinating because practically everything he said was quotable. I.E. “I know war as few other men now living know it, and nothing to me is more revolting. I have long advocated its complete abolition as its very destructiveness on both friend and foe has rendered it useless as a method of settling international disputes.”

Paul Belanger is from Arizona, having graduated from San Manuel High School where he met his bride (Roxanne) of 50 years. Paul served in the Army Reserves, and in 2003, was called to active duty for service in Iraq. He continued to serve until his retirement in 2011 as a Brigade and Division Command Sergeant Major. Decorations include Distinguished Service Medal, legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with Combat “V”, three Army Commendations medals and numerous other awards. Paul and Roxsanne live in SaddleBrooke.
