The Resurrection Lutheran Men’s Breakfast recently welcomed Bob Wells, a member of Resurrection Church, as a guest speaker. Wells shared highlights from his 30-year career in the U.S. Navy, marked by distinguished service and leadership.

Coming from a family with three generations of naval service, Wells received his commission in 1977 after graduating from UCLA on a U.S. Navy ROTC scholarship. He retired with the rank of Captain after serving aboard eight different ships. His first two assignments were as an engineering officer on guided missile destroyers, based out of San Diego and Hawaii. His initial deployments were with the 7th Fleet in the Philippines and the 5th Fleet in the Persian Gulf.

One of the defining moments of his career was serving as Commander on two separate ships. Over the course of his service, Wells was awarded 20 service medals. During his presentation, he shared gripping stories from his time at sea, including dangerous missions involving drug interdiction in the Caribbean and Central America, as well as escorting commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf after the events of 9/11. He also provided insights into the current structure and global operations of today’s U.S. Navy and its role in safeguarding American and allied interests.

Now retired, Wells serves as an adjunct professor at Arizona University and enjoys life in Tucson with his wife of over 40 years.

The breakfast event, attended by more than 60 men, began with opening remarks by committee chair Jim Seppala. Ken Shepard led the blessing, and Mark Boyce guided the group in the Pledge of Allegiance before introducing the guest speaker. A hearty breakfast, prepared by Kevin Risner of Flaming Heart BBQ Catering, was served prior to the presentation.

The next Men’s Breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, May 3—the final meeting before the summer break. The featured speaker will be Dr. Michael Knotek, who will present on “The Promise of White Hydrogen,” a new and clean alternative to carbon-based fuels.

The Resurrection Lutheran Men’s Breakfast meets on the first Saturday of each month from October through May at the Outreach Center on the church’s main campus in Oro Valley. Doors open at 7 a.m., with the program beginning at 7:30 a.m. Registration is available online at orovalley.org or by calling (520) 575-9901. A $15 donation is appreciated. All are welcome.
