As the excitement of the New Year fades, so do many of our resolutions. The SaddleBrooke Ballroom Dance Club, however, has a wonderful way to renew interest in some of those “forgotten” resolutions—especially the one about getting into shape. What better way than ballroom dancing to have fun while burning those holiday calories!
February’s featured dance class fits the bill, since it is the lively and energetic East Coast Swing (ECS). As its name implies, this dance originated on the East Coast of the United States and descended from the Lindy Hop. Dancers move in an upbeat and bouncy way when the music is fast (think calorie burning, high energy, quick steps). When the music is slow, more relaxed steps are used, making this dance very versatile and popular at all social events.
The ECS class is being taught by Lee and Diana Wille, and their enthusiasm and enjoyment when teaching will keep the lessons interesting and easy to understand.
Lessons in East Coast Swing are held on Sundays and Tuesdays in the HOA-2 ballroom, beginning on Sunday, February 2 at 3 p.m. for beginner class (designed for those who have made it through the novice program and/or danced before) at 4 p.m. for intermediate class (designed for those who learn quickly and are comfortable and eager to dance at parties). Classes will also be held at 5 p.m. for beginners and at 6 p.m. for intermediates on Tuesday, February 4.
Novice ProgramThis program was designed for those of you who have never danced, haven’t danced in a while, or have a bit of trouble communicating with their feet. Dale and Ann Pizzitola, our resident professional dancers, break it all down with simple steps and patterns that guarantee you’ll be ready for our main class program. Best of all, the novice program is FREE to residents; you do not have to be a SBDC member. The class on Wednesday, February 5 will feature Waltz and Merengue, and class on Wednesday, February 12 will be Fox Trot and Swing, both in the Mariposa room at Desert View. There will also be a practice party on February 26 at 4 p.m. in the Mariposa Room as well, allowing you to review and practice the patterns you have learned.
