The weather in January and February can be challenging, to say the least, but this year has been beautiful for the most part. The MountainView/Preserve Men’s Golf Association (MPMGA) was able to complete the final round of the Member-Member Match Play Tournament after weather caused the cancellation of the final round back in January. There were six winning teams and because I received some veiled threats, I will name all six. Bracket 1: John Brubaker and Roger Gann. Bracket 2: Kevin Conway and Doug Jones. Bracket 3: John J Smith and Carl Weller. Bracket 4: Chuck Kelsey and Jim Van Sistine. Bracket 5: Carlos Monssen and Ted Cesarz. Finally, Bracket 6: Mike Bershaw and Bob Edelblut.
We finished up the month of January with a Rotating Partners Tournament which often causes resentment of the one weak link like me on a team. Here are the winners, (teams that were still speaking to each other at the end of the round). Egan Hicks, John Cahill, Dave Hill and Mark Gingerich in the Purple-Green flight; Grant Stewart, Brian Komar, Glen Hanson and Dan Schroeder in Flight 1; David Walters, Lowell Hegg, Jim Nelson and Chet Halbleib in Flight 2; David Cohen, Keith Flewelling, Carlos Monssen and some guy named Blind.
On Thursday, February 13, my name went up in lights as Roger Gann and I tied Paul Zapf and Greg Ames for first place honors in the Purple-Green Flight of the Chapman Tournament. Doug Anderson and Mark Kunnen tied Peter Valen and Doug Johnson for first in the Green Flight. Dave Quesnell and Paul Caleb won the Green and Green/Red Flight outright. The highlight of the entire tournament came from Tony Cardillo, who at age 73, made the first ace of his “illustrious” career with a 9 iron on the sixth hole at the Preserve. Cardillo, a well-known pool shark (as in billiards), apparently used an oversized black ball with the number 8 to make his eagle.
In February, there was the Javelina Cup between the golfers of HOA-1 and the good guys from MPMGA. Still stinging from last year’s rare weather-shortened defeat at the hands of the evil empire, MPMGA golfers vowed revenge. If the unthinkable happens again, MPMGA is planning to withhold beer from HOA-1 at the postgame luncheon. Beware!
As always, the MPMGA invites new members to send an email to Dave Quesnell at davidquesnell77@gmail.com for membership inquiries.
